House of Books

Located in the residential area of Heyri Art Village, the house directly faces one of the six hills formed along the valley, with a forest that rises vertically defining its primary view. Mirroring the yin–yang relationship embedded in the surrounding topography, the site is reconfigured to slope gradually toward the mountain, drawing the flow and continuity of the landscape into the ground of the house. Within this transformation, a sunken space emerges, accommodating an ecological pond.

Positioned between two contrasting landscapes, the architecture operates as a floating filter that mediates the green spaces on both sides. Entry to the house unfolds along a bridge-like ramp that frames both landscapes simultaneously—one revealing a deeply excavated artificial terrain, the other a steeply ascending natural hillside.

The house was conceived to accommodate a collection of more than ten thousand books. Rather than being confined to a single room, the books are dispersed throughout the house, allowing daily life and reading to overlap seamlessly. The bookshelf system extends beyond furniture to become the structural framework of the house, shaping both spatial perception and circulation through a continuous sequence.
