Weaving House

Weaving House is one of five residences that bring together a parents' home and four siblings' homes. Each house maintains its own entrance while being connected through passages and stairs, enabling natural interaction among family members. At the center of the complex lies a sports and community space shared by the family. Located on a sloping site typical of Seoul, this house offers three different ways of entry according to the road's elevation. One can ascend from the garage, or slip through the courtyard space, or directly access the third-floor living room via a staircase shared with the neighboring house. The client desired an interior that was bright and open while blocking external views. Vertical timber panels fold and overlap to create a horizontal flow across the facade, gently screening views from the street while allowing natural light and air to permeate deep into the interior through the gaps. Vertical voids throughout the house draw light inward, particularly through the bamboo courtyard at the home's center and the glass skylight above the spiral staircase that connects the children's rooms, kitchen, and dining area, allowing light to diffuse throughout the house. The exterior is composed of two types of wood. Merbau, which deepens to red over time, and Iroko, which gradually lightens to a tawny hue. The two materials create a contrast of different tones as years pass, revealing the passage of time like black and white hair intermingling with age. Just as different grains form a single fabric, this house expresses the organic relationships within the community of family through the concept of "weaving."
