Inspiration from Soswaewon

Space of Rest Compressed in 2x2x2m

“ The 2 x 2 x 2 meter space, derived from the motif of Soswaewon, corresponds to the size of the room in Gwangpunggak Pavilion. It is equivalent to a single han-kan,
a traditional module of Korean architecture, and is just large enough for nine people to sit or lie down. At the same time, it may also be described as the minimum space in which one can collect the body and compose the mind.”

Soswaewon is a meditative garden that embraces the light, wind, and sounds of the bamboo grove. At the entrance to Soswaewon in Damyang, the home of bamboo, the light-filled forest offers a space where nature and people become one. Inspired by this scenery, the “Rest Box” embodies nine yoga postures. The spatial form generated by combining these movements presents the possibility for each person to rest in comfort and to enter meditation in tranquility.
