Stringscape
A.K.A. Borim Marionette Theatre

Located in the “Bookshelf” district of Paju Book City, Stringscape reinterprets the typology of publishing houses arranged like volumes on a shelf. Two vertical bar buildings contain the children’s book publisher Borim, while a horizontal marionette theater intersects between them. The office buildings are wrapped in a double skin of glass and perforated metal panels, with bamboo gardens inserted in between. Curved patterns, generated by the varying sizes of perforations, evoke both the ridges of Simhak Mountain and the rippling surface of the Han River. By day, the buildings appear as dark, opaque boxes concealing their interiors, while from within the views remain open to the surrounding landscape. At night, the illuminated offices glow outward, turning the buildings into luminous lanterns in the cityscape. The marionette theater was inspired by the image of puppets suspended on strings, moving freely against gravity. Structurally, it is lifted to open the lower space at children’s eye level. Like the offices, it is also designed with a double-skin system: movable wooden panels can be adjusted to block external light during performances. In contrast to the offices, however, the interior is opaque while the outer skin is transparent glass. Where vertical publishing spaces and horizontal cultural spaces intersect, the project creates a new cultural realm where books and performance meet.
